Diagnosis
Choanal Atresia/Stenosis
Clinical Notes
Difficulty passing nasal catheter.
Findings
CT – nasal cavity obstruction related to combination of bony and membranous narrowing of the choanae; the vomer is enlarged.
Discussion
Choanal atresia/stenosis occurs in 1 in 7000 to 18000 live births. The incidence of unilateral involvement is about the same as bilateral. Other congenital anomalies are common and include CHARGE syndrome, brain anomalies and maternal methimazole exposure. About 30% of cases are purely bony atresia with the remainder being a combination of bony and membranous obstruction.
